Fences

There are many options when it comes to building a fence for your horse. Oak fencing is the traditional option for horses due to its durability and safety profile. Other woods that are used are locust, pine, and spruce. Locust posts are environmentally safe, and do not require treating. Pine wood may be used as a lower cost option but we do not recommend it if avoidable. In fact, pine is not the wood of choice for paddock fences, as it breaks easily, bows and warps over time. We use the safest and most practical materials in the building paddock fences. One of the important requirements for a horse fence is its strong construction and easy visibility to the animal so when spooked it does not run into the fence. The heights of paddock fences vary but it should be no less than 4 feet. Well-fastened boards create secured and traditional look for paddock fences and provide fully functional enclosure for the horses. Durable gates installed around the paddock provide access, safety and rustic beauty. Some horse owners like to build a traditional wood fence with a 2×4” woven wire to the inside. This approach combines additional functionality with aesthetic appearance. Large pasture horse fences traditionally have been made with wood posts and rails. Other fencing options can include high-tensile wire, but those options are less popular.

Deer love to stroll through the gardens and orchards as though they own those pastures. They can be tremendously destructive as even a small herd can wipe out the entire garden. The best way to protect the garden and orchards from deer is with a fence. We design several options for deer fences. The deer fences are typically a minimum of 7 -8 feet high. The wire fence should rest on the ground, as deer can also crawl under fences. When it is not an option to build an 8-foot fence, there are ways to keep deer out. Increasing the depth of the fence by planting shrubs close to the fence, obstructs their “landing zone”.  While deer can jump both up and out, they do not like to land into blind spots. An effective deer proof fence is completely invisible from a distance and strong enough to withstand pressure from deer and other wildlife. Electric wire fences have not been shown to protect from wild animals. Non-domestic animals do not learn to stay away from the electric wire and will run into the fence and break it. Also, any debris carried by deer from the wooded areas (like a tree branch) will cancel out an electric fence.
